A day from Cairo holds less than most itineraries suggest, and the amount is measurable. Below are the five day tours this company actually sells from Cairo, with the hours and the stops each one is scheduled for. The pattern is consistent enough to plan around: six hours buys two sites, eight hours buys four.

Sites exclude the lunch stop and the transfers at each end, which is the only way the comparison means anything — a schedule that counts lunch as a stop can show you six.
The Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum are not the same day
This is the combination people most often assume, and on the ground it is not one of our tours. The Giza day covers the Pyramids and Saqqara. The Old Cairo day covers the Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili, the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. They are two different days, at $95 and $100.
The two fly-in tours do combine the Pyramids with the Museum, and it is worth seeing what that costs in time rather than money: the Hurghada version fits the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili into eight hours that also contain two flights. It is the tightest thing on this list. It exists because someone with one free day on a Red Sea holiday has no other way to see Giza at all, not because eight hours is a comfortable amount of time for three sites and an airport.
If you have a full day in Cairo and want both, the honest answer is two days, or one day and an acceptance that you are moving quickly.
Alexandria: six of your hours are the road
Our own itinerary puts the drive at about three hours to reach Alexandria, and the day ends by driving back. That is roughly six hours of a day tour spent travelling, before any site is seen.
What remains still holds four stops — Pompey's Pillar, the Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqafa, the Citadel of Qaitbay and the Library of Alexandria — so the day is not thin. But it is a different kind of day from a Cairo one, and anyone who dislikes long drives should know that before booking rather than at 7am.
Flying in for the day
From Hurghada the day costs $335, and from Luxor $425, against $95 and $100 for a tour that starts in Cairo. Nearly all of that difference is the flights, which are included in both.
Whether it is worth it depends on something the price cannot tell you: whether the alternative is seeing Giza on a different trip, or not seeing it at all. For a one-week Red Sea holiday with no Cairo leg, it is the only option that exists. For anyone already travelling between cities, it is usually cheaper to see Cairo from Cairo.
Start times, and why they matter here
The two Cairo-based tours start at 08:00, 09:00 or 10:00. On a six-hour day the difference between the first and the last is the difference between finishing at 14:00 and finishing at 16:00 — which, in the months when Giza is hot by mid-morning, is the more useful decision than which sites are on the list.
Choosing, in one paragraph
One day and you have never been to Egypt: the Pyramids, six hours, $95. One day and you have seen Giza before: Old Cairo and the Museum, eight hours, $100, and it is the better day of the two for anyone who likes museums. Two days: do both, in that order. A day from the Red Sea or from Luxor: fly, accept the pace, and expect the airport to take a real part of it. A day from Cairo when you want to leave the city: Alexandria, knowing about the drive.
